Some of the artists I’ve been digging over the past few months. No surprise who is in the middle.
I dig this.

4Minute (Taken with Instagram)
So today I met Japanese SUPERSTAR Utada Hikaru!
I was on my way to Belsize Park riding the Northern line when at either Angel or Kings Cross a small Japanese lady got on the tube a few feet away from me.
I looked at her and I thought to myself “LOL she looks like Utada” and was laughing to myself-some Taiwanese dudes to the left of me started laughing at ME because they obviously thought I was crazy or something.
Anyway as the train becomes emptier (after Camden Town) I get a better view of the woman sitting down and thats when I’m like, “Wait that could be Utada!” But then I was like nah, “Why would she be in London?” plus she looks almost EXACTLY like she did on the ‘Ultra Blue’ cover with the same bob cut…like here

So I decided to gas myself up and played ‘Sakura Drops’ and imagined what I’d say to her if I met her.
Curiosity really got the better of me so I stood up when the tube was near Belsize (so I could get a better look) and when I looked directly at the woman I was damn near sure it was her.
So I went up to her and said “Excuse me are you Utada Hikaru?” and she had her earphones on so she asked me to repeat what I said and when I did a bashful grin spread across her face and she said, “Yes I am”.
Luckily there was an empty seat next to her so I sat down and shook her hand and started chatting with her. I showed her that I was listening to ‘Sakura Drops’ and she was very shocked at that.
I asked her why she was here and she said she was just visiting a friend and was a bit disappointed with how the weather changed-she’s been here for over a week so far and staying around the Camden area (I won’t say where exactly).
I told her how she was the first Japanese artist I ever heard (apart from Ryu Sakamoto) and she was like “Wow Really?”
She asked ME how I even found out about her and I explained that from loving Chinese music and being on forums (like JPM which I told her about a bit) that people talked about the ‘First Love’ cd and her song for Kingdom Hearts-LOL that part of the conversation made me laugh because there I was, listing Hikki’s discography to her as if she didn’t know her own music-I’m so lame.
I told her that I went to the show in Islington (if you never went you missed a great show!) and she thanked me for that and I asked her if she’s ever going to do another one. She said it’s all up in the air and that she was on a break (I told her how pressed everyone got when she did that and she laughed!). But she said that she’s currently working on a few projects that she couldn’t really talk about but new stuff is coming soon!
I did ask for a photo but she said she’s not really taking photos right now-and I could see that she felt bad for having to say that, but I was like “No that’s fine, it’s just great to finally meet you!”
After her stop came up (YES I missed my stop just to keep talking to her LOL) we got off together and walked and talked till I realised I was going to be late for my meeting so I thanked her for the music and she said it was nice to meet me and shook my hand again and went off on her way!
Just a bit of the music I listen to a lot overall.
I’m relatively new to the whole #SeaPunk movement but I think it’s a pretty cute 90s rave throwback subculture and the music coming out from it is definitely fun.
It’s directly inspired by the sea and marine-life in general, think literally being a sea creature like a mermaid, Poseidon or a dolphin as opposed to the Nautical sensibility that is popular in the Rockabilly/Neo Swing subculture. It’s about being IN the sea as opposed to ON the sea, get it?
I hope no one becomes inspired by the Kraken though…Leading the #SeaPunk shoal of fish is Unicorn Kid-originally known for his Chiptune 8-bit inspired projects.
I posted a video before but a cool guy from this blog gave me a bit more information about the music and the movement in general. From what I’ve seen, #SeaPunk, can be similar to very chilled house from the mid-90s, but it can also be very erratic like the early 90s Rave scene so it’s a quite varied sub-culture. #SeaPunk is of course a very young subculture so it has a lot of maturing to do, just like how I feel Dubstep is only really solidifying its position as a solid genre now.

And this:
JapaYork’s Teenager is such a great, feel good track and I love the use of the steel bands in the chorus, very Caribbean and beachy sounding. Definitely a song for the summer.
I’ve also become obsessed with this track by Noms called Broseidon, King Of The Brocean:
#SEAPUNK #ESSENTIAL LISTENING from TheSuperSuper
- Zombelle & Myrrh Ka Ba – Tropicult
- Fireforeffect – ‘2 C Never Again’/Seapunk Mix Volume One
- Fonzerelli ‘ Moonlight Party’
- Jaytech – ‘ Pyramid (Dinka Mix)’
- Unicorn Kid – Tidal Rave
- Le1f – ‘Wet Werk’
- Vertruda – ‘Night Highway’
- York – ‘On The Beach’
- P.O.S. – ‘Remember (Summer Sun)’
- The Reflections – Dreamsurf: Ocean Waves for Relaxation
- Anything that sounds good underwater
A lot of people are talking about Ocean Gang but they are associated with Soulja Boi and that is the last time you will ever see that name on this site unless it’s for a Triflin Friday post. Can’t lie, the beat is hot though but those bars and his lack of flow makes me want to drown myself.
In terms of fashion, it seems to be very broad and you can have fun with it, the early images I’ve seen of the #SeaPunk kids, let’s just call them Merfolk for now is very early 90s Rave look meets The Little Mermaid meets Harajuku meets mid 90’s California surfer.
Aqua is definitely a hot hair color right now even TOP from Big Bang is rocking it:
If you’re going to take the the Marine pastel color route I would strongly advise you to use either Manic Panic as it’s a vegetable based dye that lasts a while and it mixes very well so you can do Ombre dye blends easily. I’ve used it dozens of times before with various colors-you WILL have to bleach your hair first if you have dark hair.
Work within this color scheme but just make it brighter!
I’m pretty much excited about any sub-culture that encourages people to dye their hair in outlandish colors as I live for hair dyeing.
In terms of clothing, as summer is coming around pretty soon, ditch the darker colors and ombre dye some tees using Dylon, to get an effect like this:
In terms of accessories go for Shells and other stuff that represent marine-life:
I also have to post this:
I love it!
#SeaPunk-has been producing some nice music that has a very airy quality to it. Unicorn Kid and other SP Dj’s play around Camden town a lot so I’ll to check out a rave one of these days.
Although if you watch the video (pretty much all of Bone Thug’s videos) had great and meaningful storylines.
The never aging, Amuro Namie!
The dates are:
11/07 – Amsterdam,
11/09 – Paris, FR @ Le Social Club
11/11 – London, UK @ XOYOAND THE LONDON SHOW IS ALREADY SOLD OUT!
I took a damn cat nap (not really I just went to sleep) and I find that he is doing a show here AND it’s sold out. But I have my ways, hook or by crook I’m going to that show!
After listening to the Iggy Azalea ‘mixtape’ from beginning to end one thing became strikingly apparent. Iggy Azalea’s mixtape doesn’t feel like a mixtape at all.
If anything the tape plays like a short cohesive collection of songs that stay within the same themes-I.E a Mini-Album (which…
